An Alaska Airlines flight attendant used force to stop attack on a female passenger.

On February 1, 2025, a rare incident unfolded aboard Alaska Airlines Flight 2221 from Oakland, California, to Portland when a male passenger experiencing psychosis attacked a fellow traveler, forcing a flight attendant to intervene physically to free the victim.

According to eyewitness accounts, the man, seated at the back of the aircraft, began exhibiting erratic behavior while the plane was taxiing for takeoff. He repeatedly slammed his head against the seat in front of him, briefly losing consciousness.

Upon regaining awareness, he suddenly grabbed a female passenger’s hair and refused to let go.

The woman caught off guard and unable to break free, screamed for help as other passengers attempted to intervene. A flight attendant quickly stepped in, attempting to separate the assailant from the victim.

When verbal commands and initial physical efforts failed, the crew member delivered forceful punches to the man until he finally released his grip.

The flight crew immediately alerted authorities, and the Embraer E175LR N637QX returned to the gate, where security and medical personnel removed the man from the flight. He was reportedly taken into custody for further evaluation. The female passenger sustained minor injuries but did not require hospitalization.

The FAA and local law enforcement are investigating the event, and it remains unclear whether the passenger will face charges. The flight was delayed but later continued its journey to Portland without further disruption.

On January 28, 2025, a Max Air Boeing 737 suffered a significant landing gear failure upon arrival at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport.

The Boeing 737-400 with registration 5N-MBD en route from Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, overshot the runway and crash-landed after 10 p.m.

The Boeing 737’s nose landing gear collapsed entirely, and all four main wheels burst. Passengers were evacuated through emergency exits, many in a state of panic. Despite the severity of the incident, the airline confirmed that none of the 53 passengers and six crew members were hurt.

Suspension of Domestic Flights

Following this recent incident, Max Air has announced a three-month suspension of its domestic flight operations to conduct a comprehensive safety review. The airline stated that the temporary halt will allow for fleet-wide inspections, enhanced maintenance protocols, and a reassessment of pilot training programs.

This decision comes amid growing scrutiny of Max Air’s safety record, as the airline has been involved in multiple incidents in recent years.

A Troubling Pattern of Safety Failures

The January 28 incident is not an isolated event. On May 7, 2023, the same aircraft suffered multiple tire bursts while landing at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, carrying 143 passengers. The incident led to a temporary airport closure as authorities worked to clear the runway.

More recently, on December 5, 2024, a Max Air Boeing 737-3H4 with registration number 5N-BBM caught fire 10 minutes after takeoff from Maiduguri Airport. The aircraft, carrying over 70 passengers, including Borno State Deputy Governor Usman Kadafur, was forced to make an emergency landing.

These repeated safety incidents have raised alarms about Max Air’s maintenance practices and overall operational safety. The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has previously cited poor maintenance and power failures as contributing factors in some of these events.

Passengers aboard a Boliviana de Aviacian (BoA) Boeing 737 were forced to evacuate on the runway via slides at Jorge Wilstermann International Airport following an engine failure during takeoff.

Reports from witnesses suggest that the Boeing 737-700 suffered a fire in one of its engines, prompting an emergency response. While the airline has not confirmed the fire, it acknowledged the engine failure and subsequent evacuation.

According to an airline spokesperson, there were 137 passengers and 7 crew members onboard the aircraft. “The crew, after assessing the situation and in coordination with the airport’s Fire Fighting Service, decided to evacuate the aircraft as a preventive measure to ensure the safety of everyone on board,” stated the statement.

Video footage and images from the scene show passengers evacuating the aircraft via emergency slides, with airport emergency services on standby nearby.

On January 29, 2025, 20 people lost their lives after a Beechcraft 1900D aircraft, carrying oil workers from the Unity oilfields in Rubkona County, crashed just 10 minutes after takeoff.

The aircraft with registration 5X-RHB was reportedly hired by the Greater Pioneer Operating Company (GPOC), an oil firm operating in South Sudan.

According to local officials, the aircraft had 21 people on board, including two pilots. Fifteen of them were South Sudanese nationals, two were Chinese citizens and one was Indian. The crew members were from Uganda.

Moreover, the sole survivor is in critical condition and has been taken to a hospital for treatment, State Minister Lam Tungwar Bipal confirmed.

https://twitter.com/mog_russen/status/1884622829309563345?s=46

Possible Causes: Nose-Dive or Collision?

Authorities and eyewitness reports indicate significant damage to the front of the aircraft, suggesting it may have hit an object on landing or experienced a nose-dive crash. However, the exact cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Aviation safety analysts suggest mechanical failure, weather conditions, or pilot error could have contributed to the crash, but no official report has been released.

History of Aviation Incidents in South Sudan

South Sudan has seen multiple air accidents in recent years, raising concerns about the safety of chartered and commercial flights in the region. In 2020, a cargo plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Juba International Airport, killing all passengers and crew on board.

The South Sudanese government, alongside aviation authorities, is expected to launch a full investigation into the latest tragedy, with assistance from international aviation bodies.

The Airbus A320 with registration HK-5407 was scheduled to operate flight AV9418 from Pereira to Bogota carrying 164 passengers and four crew members when the incident occurred.

According to the Civil Aeronautics department, the takeoff was interrupted after an issue with engine number one. The crew aborted the takeoff and the A320 was subsequently evacuated on the runway. All those onboard safely disembarked the aircraft via emergency slides.

Response, Airport Closure

Emergency protocols were activated promptly. Airport staff and rescue teams assisted passengers and crew in evacuating the aircraft. The airport, which operates with a single runway, was temporarily closed to allow for the removal of the aircraft from the runway.

The Civil Aeronautics department confirmed that its Technical Directorate of Accident Investigation has launched an inquiry into the cause of the incident.

“A technical indication at the time of takeoff led the pilots to prioritize safety by stopping the flight and staying on the ground,” Avianca stated. “All safety protocols were followed to ensure the well-being of passengers and crew.”

Videos captured during the evacuation showed passengers exiting the aircraft via emergency slides amidst visible panic and distress.
