Swiss plane flew back in Zurich after emergency landing in Austria in which a flight attendant was seriously injured and later died in hospital.

A Swiss International Air Lines flight bound for Zurich from Bucharest made an emergency landing in Austria on December 23, 2024 because of engine problems and smoke in the cabin and cockpit that left one crew member in intensive care. The 23 yo Swiss flight attendant has died from a lack of oxygen, autopsy revealed.

Over the past few days, SWISS mechanics fitted the aircraft with a replacement engine. This engine had been delivered to Graz by land.

Two-and-a-half weeks after, the Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) Airbus involved returned to Zurich on Thursday without passengers.

The Airbus A220-300 with the registration HB-JCD took off from Graz shortly before 3.30pm and landed in Zurich at 4.54pm Thursday, January 9 2025.

The aircraft is now being checked and tested in the technical department at Zurich Airport, the spokesperson continued. This includes, among other things, a thorough check of the systems during a test flight, which is also still taking place without passengers.

The airline has not yet been able to say when exactly the aircraft in question will return to regular flight operations. The Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board published the preliminary report on this emergency landing on Tuesday. It stated that smoke had developed in the aircraft and that the left engine had been severely damaged.

A 23-year-old crew member, died after an emergency landing in Graz, following lack of oxygen.

A Swiss International Air Lines flight bound for Zurich from Bucharest made an emergency landing in Austria on December 23, 2024 because of engine problems and smoke in the cabin and cockpit that left one crew member in intensive care.

He was taken to hospital by helicopter and transferred to the intensive care unit. A week later, he died as a result of severe oxygen deprivation.

Mysterious cause of death

According to Sonntagsblick, the autopsy revealed that the flight attendant suffered from hypoxic brain damage and cerebral edema – both the result of a massive lack of oxygen. He was also found to have an unusually large heart and purulent bronchitis.

The public prosecutor’s office in Graz is now investigating what role the breathing mask worn by the flight attendant may have played. These masks are specially designed to provide oxygen in a smoky environment.

Safety concerns about masks

The safety of the respiratory masks used has been criticized, as the Sonntagszeitung newspaper knows. Swiss had already announced in 2023 that some of the mask models were outdated and should be replaced. However, these masks are still being used in the affected A220 fleet.

According to a Swiss spokesperson, the masks are still certified and safe. However, measures are being examined to replace the remaining models more quickly.

Investigation

The Austrian and Swiss authorities are currently investigating the causes of the incident. The aircraft’s engine is also being forensically analyzed. The affected Airbus A220 is expected to return to service soon after repair work and thorough cleaning.

A Swiss International Air Lines Boeing 777-300ER encountered a series of mishaps on Saturday, forcing an emergency landing and subsequent grounding at Astana Nursultan Nazarbayev Airport.

Saturday 17 Aug 2024, the aircraft (registration HB-JNI) en route from Tokyo to Zurich, was diverted to Kazakhstan due to a medical emergency on board. While the landing was executed successfully, subsequent events unfolded.

During a turn on the taxiway, the plane’s nose wheel became lodged in the soft ground. This incident triggered an emergency response and forced the airport to close for two hours. Rescue teams were deployed to the scene to assist the stranded aircraft.

Swiss International Air Lines confirmed the incident, stating that the crew had been forced to turn the aircraft on the runway due to the closure of the taxiway. The airline is now conducting a thorough inspection of the aircraft to assess any potential damage.
