A Delta flight from Los Angeles International Airport headed to Sydney on Saturday was forced to make an emergency landing after smoke was detected on board.

The Airbus A350-900 aircraft (registration N514DN) took off just after 9 p.m. and returned to LAX 30 minutes later.

Upon returning to the gate, no smoke was in the cockpit, but according to a Live ATC, pilots still requested medical attention for passengers who may have been affected by smoke.

All 162 passengers were then rebooked on a different flight.

In a statement, Delta apologized to their customers for the delay in travel but said, “Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people.”

Flights from Los Angeles and Honolulu returned les than one hour after departure, here is why.

Saturday, December 7 2024, United flight UA3876 from Los Angeles returned to LAX.

The Boeing 787-9 (registration N36962) climbed to 27,000 ft then returned to LAX 57 minutes after departure.

Thursday, December 5 2024, United flight UA3894 from Honolulu returned less than one hour after departure.

The Boeing 777-222 (registration N774UA) climbed to 13,000 ft around the islands of Hawaii then returned to Honolulu after 49 minutes of flight.

To the North Pole

The flight had to divert, the pilot announced over the intercom Thursday afternoon.

“Santa has invited us to Christmas Island and all his elves are waiting there on the ground for us,” the pilot said.

This flight kicked off United Airlines’ Fantasy Flights, a series of 13 special flights created to spread holiday joy to deserving families, such as those with children grieving a loved one lost on active duty or caring for a child with cancer. The trips were planned jointly with local hospitals and nonprofits who helped identify the families.

“There are so many little kids that have never even been on a plane,” said Lena Wong, a United customer service agent who planned this year’s effort.

These short flights whisk the families away – taking off and back again to where they started – to spend an evening at the North Pole, a festive winter wonderland transformed by on-the-ground United staff, including retirees, and volunteers.

Wednesday, September 11 2024, Virgin Atlantic flight #VS8 departed LAX about one hour late at 18:08 PDT. The Airbus A350-1000 took off from the runway 24L.

The aircraft (registration G-VPOP) stopped climbing at 15,000 ft then entered a hold. Pilots had to deal with a technical issue with the aircraft and contacted ATC to require a return to LAX Airport.

The Airbus A350K aircraft landed on runway 25L one hour and 25 minutes after departure.

As the crew didn’t have much time to burn/dump fuel, the plane was met by ARFF to inspect the hot brakes.

The airline confirmed a technical issue. The aircraft is still on the ground at Los Angeles at the time we’re writing this article.

On 6th July, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) saw a dramatic turn of events when a man, reportedly experiencing a mental health crisis, breached security and ran onto the airfield near a taxiing American Airlines plane.

The incident unfolded inside Terminal 4 when the unidentified man became irate and bolted past security measures, prompting a swift response from Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers.

According to reports, the man, who was barefoot and shirtless, was apprehended by airport security after running onto the tarmac. While initial reports suggested the man might have been chasing a missed flight, the motive behind his actions remains unclear.

Authorities confirmed the man was arrested for battery against a police officer during the apprehension. He was then transported to a nearby hospital for a mental health evaluation.

No disruptions were reported and LAX officials are likely to investigate the security breach to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

British Airways A380 from London Heathrow to LAX returned to the gate following issue on board.

British Airways A380 registration G-XLEJ was scheduled to depart London Heathrow at 14:05 BST to Los Angeles LAX.

The aircraft left the terminal 5 and lined up to runway 09R then exited the runway to return to the gate.

About one hour later, the same A380 left the gate and lined up to runway 27L as Heathrow switched active runways due to wind direction change at 15:00 BST.

But the exact same scenario occurred: the aircraft aborted the takeoff and left the runway.

Few minutes later, the A380 returned to the runway threshold and took off at 17:00 BST.

We’re very sorry, this flight has been delayed.

British Airways

The airline is confirming a late departure due to an issue on board without giving more details at this time.

Qatar #QR741 to LAX diverted to JFK to refuel following change of flight path to avoid Iranian airspace.

Qatar Airways was forced to change flight path following drones attack in Israel.

The flight #QR741 from Doha to Los Angeles LAX was forced to avoid Iranian airspace in the night of Sunday, April 14 2024.

The flight was operated by an Airbus A350-1000 (registration A7-ANS). It departed Hamad International Airport 2 hours late because of the ongoing attack in Israel.

Israel and Iran closed its airspaces forcing the airline to cancel the flight or change the flight path.

The path to LAX usually crosses over Iran to go straight North over the Svalbard then Canada and the West coast of the US for a 16-hour flight long.

The decision was took to fly to West, avoiding closed Israel airspace to reach Spain then to cross the Atlantic for a stopover at New York JFK airport.

The plane landed at 11:00 local time and was supposed to refuel before resuming the flight to Los Angeles. However that second legs looks to have been canceled.

The aircraft is currently still at JFK at the time we write this article.

On Sunday, August 30th, Airlines pilots landing at LAX Airport, reported seeing “a guy in a jetpack” flying around 300 yards next to their wing while they were on the final approach.

The pilots of American Airlines flight 1997 from Philadelphia reported the situation with the ATC:

  • American Flight 1997: “Tower, American 1997, we just passed a guy in a jetpack.”
  • Tower: “American 1997, OK, thank you. Were they off to your left or right side?”
  • American Flight 1997: “Off the left side, maybe 300 yards or so, about our altitude.”

In addition to this, Skywest pilots also confirmed the sightseeing saying:

  • Skywest Flight: “We just saw the guy passing by us in the jetpack.”

The LAX tower also asked other planes on approach to be cautious and keep an eye out for the guy with the jetpack.

Regarding this, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it turned over the case to the Los Angeles Police Department. However, the Police department says it received no such report from the FAA.

This incident is being investigated thoroughly.
