A two-day strike by workers at Munich Airport, Germany’s second-biggest, started Thursday and resulted in most flights being canceled.

The airport operator said airlines had canceled about 80% of their flights to and from Munich and further cancelations were not ruled out.

This amounts to over 1,300 flights, with more possible cancellations.

The ver.di service workers’ union called the “warning strike,” a tactic often used in German pay negotiations, on Monday as it seeks to step up pressure in ongoing talks with the federal government and municipal authorities on wages and working conditions for public-sector employees.

The industrial action is set to end at midnight on Friday. Workers at ground handling services are among those taking part.

Public sector workers also walked off the job in various other locations and services in Germany. Those included some workers at Hamburg Airport, though the airport said the only flights canceled were those to and from Munich, German news agency dpa reported.

Hamburg Airport advised travelers to arrive early and, if possible, with only hand baggage.

A video shared online shows a drunk passenger forcing an EasyJet flight to make an emergency landing in Munich.

Flight U28235, which departed from London Gatwick Airport en route to Kos International Airport in Greece Tuesday (September 3) afternoon, experienced turbulence, which apparently angered the intoxicated passenger, who reportedly called the captain “rubbish” and stood up to disrupt the flight, causing arguments with other passengers and a reported brawl.

The male passenger allegedly attempted to open an emergency exit during the flight.

A TikTok post showed other passengers applauding as the man was restrained during the emergency landing, which EasyJet confirmed was caused by a “passenger behaving disruptively onboard” in a statement.

The plane made an emergency landing at Munich International Airport about an hour and 44 minutes after taking off.

The disruptive passenger was handcuffed and removed from the flight by German police.

Other passengers taunted the man as he was being detained, which included another man angrily yelling “get off, you loser,” and several others chanting the lyrics of ‘Sound of da Police’ by rapper KRS-One.

The passenger reportedly broke the onboard intercom and fought with flight crew members during the mid-flight incident.

Lufthansa A350 to Tokyo Haneda returned to Munich after more than 8 hours into the flight.

Friday, August 16 2024, the Lufthansa flight #LH714 departed Munich Airport, Germany for a 12-hour flight to Tokyo Haneda Airport.

The Airbus A350-941 (registration D-AIXG) took off from runway 08R one hour late on scheduled time and climbed to 37,000 ft.

But while over the Caspian Sea, in Kazakhstan’s airspace, the aircraft turned around and climbed to 38,000 ft.

In decision with the airline, the crew decided to return all the way back to Munich.

It’s not clear yet if that decision was related to typhoon Ampil but it was more probably due to a technical issue with the aircraft as flight LH716 from Frankfurt to Tokyo was cancelled due to the weather conditions.

The A350 landed back on runway 08R, 8 hours and and 22 minutes later.

The 6 year-old aircraft landed under the escort of multiple emergency services and remained on the runway for a while.

According to spokesmen for the airport and the federal police, the airport was completely closed for security reasons.

The protest, which took place at the start of the Whitsun holiday, a peak travel period in Germany, affected around 60 flights and led to the diversion of 11 others.

After about two hours, one of the two runways was able to go into operation, and later the second runway as well.
