Brazilian Air Force provided support in the investigation and received representatives from Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Russia.

The Center for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (Cenipa) concluded on Monday the analysis of the black boxes from the Embraer plane that crashed in Kazakhstan on December 25.

The equipment arrived on Brazilian soil on January 1 and began to be analyzed the following day. According to interlocutors involved in the investigation, this Saturday the “extraction, acquisition and validation of the data contained in the two recorders” was concluded.

The aircraft, manufactured by Embraer, took off from Baku (Azerbaijan) on December 25 and crashed while attempting to land in Aktau, Kazakhstan. The Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer 190 was bound for the Russian city of Grozny, the capital of Chechnya, but was forced to make an emergency landing near the city of Aktau.

In all, 38 people died and another 29 were injured. According to the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), investigators from Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Russia came to Brazil to monitor the work. These investigators followed the data decoding process and, according to sources, began returning to their countries of origin this Saturday.

The extracted data will be delivered to the Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority of Kazakhstan – the agency responsible for analyzing and investigating the accident. There are still no details about what was heard in the recordings. “All analysis and conclusions that will be published in the Final Report of this aeronautical investigation are the sole responsibility of the Kazakh Investigation Authority,” the FAB said upon the arrival of the black boxes.

On Saturday, Russian President Putin apologized to his Azerbaijani counterpart for what he called a “tragic incident” following the crash of an Azerbaijani Airlines Embraer 190 aircraft in Kazakhstan.

In a telephone conversation with the Azerbaijani president, Putin “apologized for the fact that the tragic incident occurred in Russian airspace and once again expressed his deepest and most sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.”

Flight J28243 crashed on Wednesday near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan after diverting from southern Russia where Ukrainian drones were reported to be attacking several cities.

At least 38 people were killed. Four sources with knowledge of the preliminary findings of Azerbaijan’s investigation into the disaster told Reuters on Thursday that Russian air defences had mistakenly shot it down.

Azerbaijan Airlines with 67 passengers and 5 crew members has crashed near Aktau, Kazakhstan.

Azerbaijan Airlines E190 (registration 4K-AZ65) had to do an emergency landing near Aktau airport. The landing resulted with and angled hit to the ground, blown up in fire.

By preliminary report there were 67 passengers and 5 crew members. Has been reported initially 6 survived, then updated to 10 and later increased to 12 people.

The 8 shaped landing attempt is seen and left me unsure why it had to do such go round and leaving me with thoughts of to decrease the ground speed for softer landing to the Aktau airport.

The video footages show the crash onto the ground, while radar data ends at the shore point. The captain probably aimed to land at runway which was quite near.

Was the plane shot down?

Multiples holes at the tail of the Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer ERJ-190 could suggest the aircraft was shut down. They are typical to a surface-to-air missile.

At the time of the incident, Ukraine launched several drone attacks to Russia, air defense was on alert.

There are claims that a Russian air defense system in Chechnya or Dagestan may have mistakenly fired on the plane.

One of the passengers who survived the crash, Kristina, said on social media that the plane had been circling over Aktau for about an hour before it crashed. She said she heard a muffled bang, similar to a collision, during the descent. Another passenger, Zaur Mammadov, said he heard two explosions during the flight.

Official statement by Azerbaijan Airlines: “Until the investigation is concluded, Azerbaijan Airlines has suspended flights en route Baku-Grozny-Baku and Baku-Makhachkala-Baku. All other flights will be operated as scheduled.”
