A pair of wayward deer forced forced Hokkaido’s New Chitose Airport to close both runways.

On the 6th of March 2025, two deer entered the area near the runways at New Chitose Airport (CTS), forcing both runways to be closed to ensure safety just after 10 a.m.

A pair of wayward deer forced the operator of Hokkaido’s New Chitose Airport to close both runways for almost an hour. The trespassing animals were eventually driven off the grounds.

The operator said four flights diverted to other airports and 3 had to make go around.

A missing pair of scissors brought an international airport in Japan to a standstill last Saturday.

Thirty-six flights were cancelled and 201 delayed at a Japanese airport on the weekend after a pair of scissors went missing in a store near the boarding gates.

Security checks at Hokkaido’s New Chitose Airport domestic terminal were suspended for about two hours on Saturday morning, leaving hundreds of travellers temporarily stranded.

The suspension of security checks led to a severe backlog, resulting in lengthy queues that stretched for hours, with many passengers being turned away and denied entry to the airport.

The airport was especially congested that day, as travellers were returning home after the Obon holiday, a traditional Japanese festival honouring ancestors.
