Air Greenland to Nuuk looks to be returning to Copenhagen.

Flight GL781 from Copenhagen to Nuuk has turned around over Greenland.

The Airbus A330-800 (registration OY-GKN) departed Copenhagen Thursday, January 2 2025 to Nuuk but turned around instead to land 5 hours into the flight.

The aircraft turned around and is diverting back to Denmark possibly due to strong wind.

The wind is gusting up to 54 kt making any landing impossible.

About the same situation occurred on Saturday, December 7 2024 but the flight didn’t even reach Iceland before returning.

The flight looks to be on the same path and returning to CPH Airport, which would make a 10-hour flight to nowhere.

The new international airport, equipped with a 2,200-meter (7,217-foot) runway, is opening today in the capital of Nuuk. The new runway will allow larger planes to connect the Arctic territory with the rest of the world.

Air Greenland flight #GL781 will depart Copenhagen at 10:45 CEST and land in Nuuk at 12:35 WGT.

Already, 130,000 visitors a year come to Greenland on cruise ships or fly in. It’s a number expected to grow as the region opens up to tourism.

Starting in June, United Airlines will offer nonstop seasonal flights from Newark, New Jersey, that will take just over four hours.

The new airport will serve as the base for Air Greenland, which will operate an Airbus A330neo plane on a route to Copenhagen, Denmark. It will be able to handle 800 passengers an hour. Flights will also link Nuuk to Reykjavik, Iceland.
