The Boeing 737-800, with registration G-JZHJ, was en route to the UK, was it diverted to mainland Spain on Friday afternoon after a man, believed to be in his 70s, died. 

The flight LS676 was cruising at 37,000 ft from the Canary Island at 7.05pm before the emergency was declared and the plane turned to Spain.

The crew notified air traffic control that a man was experiencing a severe medical emergency and was in need of urgent assistance.

The jet was forced to touchdown at Santiago de Compostela (SCQ), so emergency services could attend to the individual.

An ambulance was sent to the terminal at the Galician capital, but the man was pronounced dead on arrival. 

A Jet2 spokesperson said: ‘We can confirm that flight LS676 from Tenerife to East Midlands Airport diverted to Santiago de Compostela on Friday 14th February due to a customer requiring urgent medical attention. Sadly, we can confirm that the customer has passed away and we would like to extend our deepest sympathies to their family and friends at this difficult time.’

The flight #LS135 departed Glasgow today at 07:07 GMT to Rome, Italy.

Pilots declared an emergency (squawk 7700) 1 hour and 30 minutes into the flight.

The Boeing 737-800 (registration G-JZBV) turned around over Paris.
