According to sources, the four Air India crew member didn’t carry the CMC, while a fifth one arrived with an invalid CMC. Earlier, crew could also pay 10 Euros and obtain a CMC at the airport, but Zurich changed these rules on February 5.

A Crew Member Certificate (CMC) is an identification card issued by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to facilitate the movement of airline pilots and cabin crew members.

Some of these five crew members were confined for an unspecified duration in a tiny cell for detainees, according to sources among the airline crew.

These sources also said that the crew were allowed to step out only to use the toilet and were barred from even using their mobile phones until local airline staff intervened and got them help.

Air India’s official sources said crew members were shifted to a transit hotel, and at least four of them were still in Zurich.

A 17-year-old boy was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the bomb threats issued to airlines in the past three days.

The aircraft is a 6-year-old Boeing 777-300ER (registration VT-ALX).

Flight #AI127 was en route from New Delhi to Chicago, when it took the precautionary measure of landing at Iqaluit Airport, according to a written statement from Air India.

The Boeing 777-300ER (registration VT-ALM) landed on runway 34 at YFB Airport, 300km (186 miles) north of the Arctic circle, after 11 hours and 26 minutes into the flight.

All the 211 passengers and crew disembarked the aircraft around 5:20am and were relocated to Iqaluit International Airport. 

As the incident happened in Nunavut, Cpl. George Henrie said local authorities will be investigating the bomb threat.

The aircraft and the passengers are being re-screened as per the laid down security protocols.

Air India said it received a number of bomb threats in recent days.

“Though all have subsequently been found to be hoaxes, as a responsible airline operator, all threats are taken seriously,” said the company.

It said it’s considering legal action against the “perpetrators of such threats to ensure that they are held accountable for the disruption and inconvenience caused to passengers” and to recover damages to the airline.
